Ionospheric Boundaries Derived From Auroral Images

چکیده

This paper presents updated methods for locating the Poleward and Equatorward Auroral Luminosity Boundaries (PALB EALB) directly from IMAGE Far UltraViolet (FUV) images of Northern Hemisphere auroral oval. Separate boundaries are determined measured at different FUV wavelengths. In addition, new indirectly estimating Open-Closed magnetic field line Boundary (OCB) Precipitation (EPB) locations presented; these derived a combination luminosity boundary estimates with statistical latitudinal offsets comparisons low-altitude spacecraft Particle (PPBs). Subsequently, we derive circle model fits all data sets, as well quality control criteria fits. The suitability each sets is discussed, OCB PALB validated against Convection Reversal (CRB), by in situ spacecraft. All covering epoch May 2000 to October 2002, freely available online.

Ionospheric Models including the Auroral Environment

Modelling of the ionospheric-plasmaspheric electrondensity height profile N(h), as well as other parameters like the ion composition or electron and ion temperatures, over the whole altitude range for all geographical positions, time spans, and geophysical conditions is an essential part of ionospheric physics and a critical element in the development of practical schemes for ionospheric space ...

Ionospheric conductances derived from satellite measurements of auroral UV and X-ray emissions, and ground-based electromagnetic data: a comparison

Global instantaneous conductance maps can be derived from remote sensing of UV and X-ray emissions by the UVI and PIXIE cameras on board the Polar satellite. Another technique called the 1-D method of characteristics provides mesoscale instantaneous conductance profiles from the MIRACLE ground-based network in Northern Scandinavia, using electric field measurements from the STARE coherent scatt...

Ionospheric effects on differential GPS applications during auroral substorm activity

Ž . The use of the Global Positioning System GPS technology has become increasingly incorporated into airborne remote sensing applications over the past decade. While GPS positioning results may prove adequate for several applications at present, users should expect to experience degraded positioning accuracies over the next few years due to auroral substorm activity. Such degraded accuracies w...

Ionospheric structure and the generation of auroral roar

Ionospheric electron density data from the Sondrestrom incoherent scatter radar (ISR) have been used to characterize the structure of the F region ionosphere during ground-based LF/MF/HF receiver observations of natural ionospheric radio emissions known as auroral roar. In five out of six cases, the F region ionosphere has significant horizontal Ne gradient scale lengths (IVN/NI mi• < 120 km, m...

Using Relevance Feedback in Retrieving Auroral Images

In modern space physics research, digital imagers are widely utilised in studies of the near-Earth space environment. The physical process being directly observed is the aurora, and millions of auroral images are acquired annually. These data sets provide a wealth of opportunities for developing and testing content-based image retrieval (CBIR) techniques with the irregular natural shapes occurr...
